Artists Statement

In seeking theories about the nature of the human understanding of "time", I have come across many unusual analogies, metaphors and models of what time is and how we perceive it. I have no intention of answering any questions but insist on getting closer to whatever my "vision" is that seems to drive me to create. I am fascinated by scientific and philosophical papers on the subject of time and allow these references to influence my understanding both mentally and visually.

Work that references "time" lends itself well to the "artists book". Not wanting to simply reproduce my work in a time-dependant narrative format, I have finally resolved a long kept fascination for second-hand hardback books by using them as my medium for creating new work. The final bookwork is inherently already set as a narrative but takes on a new form and carries a different "message" from the original.

Not aside from this, but intrinsically linked is that same notion of absurdity that has fuelled the works of Fluxus artists, and Existentialist writers. Although my visual work so far has concentrated on the influences described above, I have many ideas and projects that focus on this latter notion and have yet to take a visual or physical form.

My purpose as an artist is two-fold. It is to explain my interpretation of some experiences and philosophies but also to clarify in my own mind the undefined yearning to re-shape the materials available to me in order to communicate something. I aim to do this in such a way that others are able to associate with my interpretation of life and my experiences with intuitive ease. Perhaps because that is the way my mind works, I believe that communication of these ideas is most effective in a visual form.
